  • Amiya Chakraborty, playwright, director, and lead actor, is one of the most successful theatre personalities of Calcutta. He had different ideologies towards theatre, working on the likes of Death of a Salesman and The Blue Horse, both of which flopped despite the quality. Amiya is also happily married to Mala, a teacher, who is happy to let Amiya focus on his work, supporting him financially…..One day Mala comes across one of Amiya’s unfinished scripts, The Prostitute, and insists he finish it. She predicts success for the play. Amiya agrees, and asks Rajani, a leading actress, to play the main role, that of the prostitute, Lata.
  • Rajani helps Amiya to pay his debts off. She is married to Sasanka, who hails from a rich family, and is not used to work. With the sole intention of living off Rajani’s income, Sasanka wants her to take up only the assignments that offer a substantial pay. However, Rajani gets adamant and accepts the role. The play also involves several intimate scenes between Prasad (Amiya) and Lata (Rajani). While this contributes to the success of The Prostitute, it also helps initiate a passionate relationship between Amiya and Rajani.
  • Amiya’s fortune changes as The Prostitute becomes a massive hit. Not only do his finances grow, he also finds a huge fan base among both the class and the mass. However, critics and rival theatre groups, do not approve of the script on the ground that it clashes with the culture and Amiya had to discontinue the play.Amiya suffers a massive heart-attack, but refuses to adhere to his doctor’s instructions and decides to work on a new play,The Empress .
  • The first scene of The Empress involves The Emperor (Amiya) going on a murder spree, culminating in strangling of The Empress (Rajani). The play flops, mostly due to lack of intimate scenes, and once curtains falls, Bishnu discovers that Amiya had really strangled Rajani to death. Upon discovery, Amiya himself suffers from a stroke. Trying to kiss Rajani for one last time, Amiya falls on her and passes away. The play ends with Mala and the soul of Rajani performing Amiya’s last rites
