- Luigi Pirandello is possibly the most studied and debated dramatist of the twentieth century. Remaining at a mysterious distance little is known of his life. While depicting his life, the social, political and cultural scenario of the times becomes evident. It was Mussolini’s regime on the days of early fascism….When Luigi Pirandello was 58, he met Marta Abba who was then 25 years of age. By then, Luigi had written stories, novels, poetry and had earned fame for his play “Six Characters in Search of an Author”.Marta became his muse for all the dramas, Luigi wrote thereafter.
- Mussolini declared that he would rebuild Italy that had been ruined by the First World War – that he would be leading the cultural renaissance. Pirandello becomes a supporter of Mussolini and his fascism. Engrossed in the dreams of a new Italy, of development of theatre in Italy, of National Drama Institute, Luigi, at one point, finds out that the complexity of his relationship with Marta despair in the development of theatre in Italy, and fearful attacks of fascism all around have caged him in a suffocating atmosphere. Luigi’s personal family-life experience has also not been very happy from his young age. Both Pirandello and Marta shared a strong interest in preserving the freedom and vitality of the theatre and in the creation of innovative works of artistic imagination.
- On the other hand, the Fascist Corporations, with their theatre associations depending on and tied to men involved in national politics were not particularly concerned with the needs of theatre, with society’s need for theatre, and most importantly with theatre as a space for artistic expression. Fascists are hostile to culture. And hence, renowned authors of the whole world have written against them.
