  • Pontu Laha, the protagonist of our play is an undeniably wealthy individual-a landlord, a landholder, owner of vast tracts of agricultural land, an investor and an entrepreneur. He is many other things all of which are intrinsically and overtly related to capital. Acknowledging the symbiotic relationship between capital and politics in the Grand Indian Narrative as an absolute truth, Pontu Laha is contesting the election as a candidate from the Lahapur constituency, Lahapur being his fiefdom. He has also fixed up the marriage of his only daughter and sole heir, with the Officer in Charge of the Lahapur police station.
  • The election and the impending wedding-are the two ostentatious events which propel the play forward. However, characters who occupy a binary and oppositional space in relation to capital, keep entering the play, Moti Sarkar, Pontu Laha’s driver/chauffeur cum Man Friday ,being preeminent amongst them.
  • It is common knowledge that Pontu Laha has a split personality, a duality that defines him as a character: he is a revolutionary in his drunken state, but the moment he comes out of his drunken stupor, he metamorphoses  into  a  cuthroat  capitalist  and  a  merciless  employer. However, in the present context, in the socio-political reality of 2019, a theatrical exploration of this dualism, that is the crux of the play, by the means of presenting some key characters and by rearranging some scenes, for the emergence of a new discourse, seems both necessary and relevant. This search for a different dimension is the impetus that has prompted us to theatrically confront and re-work Brecht’s seminal text: Herr Puntila and His Man Matti.
  • A character called Suren Das, keeps invading the dramatic space, with a lantern in hand. He comes and goes, but why he comes and goes we fail to fathom! Just as we fail to fathom , define or categorize the story, the narrative embedded in the play. If we are compelled to state the story of Pontu Laha 2.0 in a nutshell, we have to say that it is the story of India. Not the narrative of a ‘Shining India’ but the story of the other India, we are encountering since our childhood: an India being ravaged and wounded relentlessly. And these wounds have become septic, the infection has spread. As we look into these wounds-gaping and ulcerous, oozing pus and blood,- they look back at us.
