- Tughlaq, a famous play by Girish Karnad, captures the reign of a man who got too much power and couldn’t understand how to wield such authority on unwilling subjects…..The play is timeless, its many interpretations are proof enough of its brilliance. Girish Karnad once said that Tughlaq struck him as “the most idealistic, the most intelligent king ever to come to the throne of Delhi, who nevertheless ended as “one of the greatest failures” because of contradiction within his personality and the self-defeating nature of his politics.
- Debesh Chattopadhyay reinterprets the dreams and delusions of the most remarkable Sultan of medieval India. The play starts with Tughlaq being portrayed as a strict yet respected ruler. This infamous historical figure was a misunderstood ruler who considered himself as the sole arbiter of truth. It dramatically highlights the importance of credibility and authenticity for a leader. Some of his subjects are clever enough to identify and misuse the loopholes in every law so that they can profit.
- “Tughlaq” highlights a plethora of social problems.
