                      Bishwashghatak – The betrayal : Director’s note

  • Amongst the various historical anecdotes that India is replete with, the dethroning and subsequent assassination of Siraj-ud-daullah , Nawab of Bengal from 1756 to 1757, forms one of the most tragic, significant and romantic episodes of Indian history. The betrayal of the brave young Nawab by his own courtiers, the rising of a new  Hindu dominance from the stand point of mere religion and the capture of Bengal by the East India Company that would ultimately pave the way for British rule in India for the next nearly two hundred years, lends incredible importance to the defeat of Siraj in the legendary Battle of Plassey.
  • The ganging up of the feudal Hindu lords along with the Nawab’s courtiers against the valiantSiraj, egged on by the dangerous manipulations of the wily Robert Clive, ensured a British trick of divide and rule that would ultimately destroy the very ethos of the ancient land of Bharat. India was to be plundered, looted and cast asunder once the ravaging was complete, to become finally, a poor, broken, underdeveloped economy by the mid twentieth century. It was unfortunate that Siraj and his wise grandfather, the great NawabAlivardi Khan had anticipated thisvery plan by the cunning officers of the Company but were unable to prevent the takeover of Bengal and thereby India, due to the reprehensible conspiracy of their own lords, kin and courtiers. This betrayal by our countrymen themselves, proved to be ultimately the undoing of our vast nation and if we do not learn from the pages of history , then unfortunately we will be subjected to the same tortuous trauma for centuries on end.
  • Our play, excellently researched and brilliantly crafted by ace playwright PadmanabhaDasgupta, traces the rise and fall of Siraj while parellely exposing the treachery of the back stabbers of the royal court and the cunningstrategy of the British administration. We have taken care to remain authentic to our sources and right from the costume to the stage set up, we have tried to recreate the very pages of history that we depict. If the realization of the gravity of the betrayal, resonates with our audience we shall know that we have been that much little successful and our efforts will be truly rewarded.
