- Based on Anthony Hope’s famous novel “The Prisoner of Zenda”, the play “AAR EK JHINDER BONDI” shares the same core storyline as Tapan Sinha’s film Zhind-er Bandi. However, the play contains much more humor and introduces several additional characters.
- Petopanchu is an ordinary Bengali youth who looks exactly like the King of Zhind, Shankar Singh. Meanwhile, King Shankar has gone missing, so the King’s chief minister Sardar Dhananjay sets out to find someone who resembles him. Suddenly, he discovers Petopanchu. In exchange for a high monthly salary, Panchu agrees to pretend to be Shankar.
- On the other hand, Zhind’s greatest warrior, Mayoorbahan, has kidnapped Shankar and is keeping him intoxicated with alcohol and women, intending to make Shankar’s brother Udit the next king. The play shows how terrifying the struggle for the throne and the greed for power can be—this fight existed in the past, exists now, and will continue in the future. Brothers don’t even hesitate to kill each other.
- After many such dramatic twists, when Mayoorbahan and his allies begin to lose against Sardar Dhananjay’s schemes, Udit and Mayoorbahan plot to murder Petopanchu. But Petopanchu’s own stomach saves him, and the real Shankar sits on the throne while Udit and Mayoorbahan are imprisoned. Petopanchu returns to his old life once again.
