Adamya (The Unbroken)

APARNA SEN PRESENTS

  • Concept:
  • After a failed assassination attempt on a minister, 23-year-old Palash, the perpetrator, seeks refuge in a remote village in the Sundarbans, and is declared a fugitive fleeing through the marshlands. Torn between being a patriot and an extremist, his gripping, psychological journey tests his survival, beliefs, and true identity.

  • Short synopsis:
  • A political assassination goes wrong. Palash, the 23-year-old hunter becomes the hunted. And as he flees from the system, the meaning of the collective and its movement goes through several changes for him. Set in the delta region of Eastern India – which has been home to long standing conflicts between man, nature and the state – ADAMYA aka The Unbroken is a character study of the young man as we debate – is he an extremist? Or, is he a revolutionary? Death comes swiftly through the darkness of the night but the spirit of the movement remains unbroken. A new dawn will see a new fight.

  • Long synopsis:
  • A 23-year-old boy is on the run after firing at a minister at a political rally in the city of Kolkata. He gets instructions over the phone. He boards a train and alights at a satellite town near the Bay of Bengal coast. He spends the night there. The next day, he reaches a remote village in the Sundarbans mangrove forest area. Over the phone, the local handler asks him to stay put in a mud hut for a few days. His only connection with the outside world is a basic phone which gives news updates on the case and the reactions of society to his perceived criminal act. As he spends his time in the hut reading, sketching, solving word puzzles, etc., his character is revealed. The young adult also has his inner demons and a dark past to deal with. On the third night, his identity is busted and he is attacked in the hut. He flees and takes refuge on a trawler. The next morning, he is discovered hiding under the deck, but the trawler is already in mid-sea! He is interrogated by the fishermen who are doubtful of his intentions. He manages to escape from the trawler and reaches another island. He is thirsty, hungry, and his phone is wet. What does he do? Does he manage to escape? Or, will the system finally subdue him? The boy leaves us with the most important question – Is he a terrorist? Is he revolutionary? Who is he?!

  • Director’s statement:
  • When our political class fails us, when our beautiful democracies are manipulated into elected autocracies, when the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, when the vast lands and dense forests of the tribals are handed over to crony capitalist friends of the ministers, when the legal system becomes unaffordable to the common man seeking redressal, there rises a group of youth that seeks freedom from poverty, casteism, communalism, corruption, bigotry, and exploitation. They may want to cleanse the scum on their own. The system has a ready label for them – extremists. But it is for us, the people, to decide if they are extremists or revolutionaries, anti-nationals or patriots.
