August 16 1946. Muslims League called for Direct Action Day throughout India. Kolkata and its suburb witness a wave of communal violence. Samaresh walks alone through the riot ridden city, from street to street, mahalla to mahalla. Along with him we start walking.
In the barren curfewed streets of the city, Samaresh saw the man. The scared man is hiding beside a shattered dustbin. Another man crawled out of the side street and hides on the other side of the same dustbin. Samaresh starts conversing with them and also with us and we slowly enter the world of his most devastating short story ‘ADAB’.
Samaresh is reading out the story and his wife Gouri is eagerly listening with wet eyes. Evening darkness slowly ingress into their household. Gouri lighten the clay lamp before holy TULSI plant. Samaresh wonders how the same Dharma shed blood on the street and again provide serenity inside our mind. Venom (GARAL) and Nectar (AMRIT) on the same bowl.
We enter into the literary world vis a vis personal life of an artist in pursuit of AMRIT. Sometimes riding the broken wings of butterfly (Projapati) or in the crowd of Kumbha Mela in search of nectar (Amrita kumbher sandhane) or drifting through river Ganges (GANGA) with a hope to live again and again (Jug Jug Jiye) since the world of Valmiki (Prachetas) till death, we
follow Samaresh from slums of Athpur to Naihati, from presidency Jail to city of Kolkata (Mahanagar). It is an amazing journey.
To look back the world of the Artist whose resolve of life is not to look back (DEKHI NAI FIRE) is nothing but a quest.
The play is all about that quest – the pursuit of AMRIT, the soul of human civilization.
