• A town in this world: Reigned by a gang of venal officials and political leaders.
An unexpected piece of news: A government inspector arrived in disguise to investigate the corruption and bribery cases in the town.
• One and only goal of the corrupt public servants: Not to remain apprehended.
A surprising coincidence: Appearance of a cunning and characterless trickster in the town.
An outright wrong correlation: The trickster mistaken for the government inspector.
A climax: The amoral power gang of the town meeting the trickster, for a clash or a truce?
• It is an adaptation of Russian-Ukrainian dramatist and novelist Nikolai Gogol’s “The Government Inspector” (Russian: Ревизор, tr. Revizor, literally: “Inspector”), which has been ranked as one of the 15 “Best plays of all time” by The Daily Telegraph in 2014. This hilarious satire against corruption, as wonderfully adapted by the playwright Padmanabha Dasgupta, presents a commentary on an increasingly consumerist, commercial and cutthroat world where principles and values are sacrificed every moment at the altar of material success and power.
• May I, on behalf of Rashbehari Shailushik and the entire team of “Barkatgunjer Bawkra”, invite you all to witness this newest production of ours, to encourage us, and to be with theatre.
