  • The distance between one inner world and another.Migration from place to place.Mobile memories of the past that continue to live in the future. To song alone within a friendless crowd.Old walls, old smells, old love, old blood, old furniture. These are the roots of ‘Basabadol’.
  • It does not unfold layer by layer like a flower. It hides beneath the ground like a tree’s life, distant and unseen. An old man is about to leave his ancestral house.
  • In the first part of the play, this news arrives at the old man’s bed through his shoes. For the first time, the shoes enter the room of the house. The bed neither fully rejects nor fully accepts them. In the dialogue between the bed and the shoes, their class positions are revealed. Each tries desperately to prove who truly knows the owner better….The bed tells the story of a princess whose day of death was predetermined, yet who made love to the man on that bed before dying.
  • The second part introduces the old man and Mahakaal, the young man who has come to facilitate the house shifting. Mahakaal is a broker, a dealer in transitions. This is his first visit of the house. He has no surname. The old man, too, has no identity beyond his age—whatever that age may be…From the conversations between the bed and the shoes, we learn that the old man has a poet’s soul. He weeps in cremation grounds. He once went to the underground railway to end his life, but could not. He sees life in every object of the house. He speaks to them, mourns with them, shares their sorrow.
  • Such an old man serves Mahakaal alcohol mixed with poison. As Mahakaal slowly slips into intoxication and toxicity, he begins to discover that his mother’s skeleton lies in one of the small chambers of the house.
The old man suggests that he himself might be the missing surname of Mahakaal.
  • After the young man’s death, the old man shoots himself. So who is this old man? Who is the skeleton in the adjacent room? Is it truly a skeleton at all? Who is the young man? Why this murder? Is this the story of two nameless men acquiring name and identity through death? Who is the girl from the fairy tale? Who or what are the bed and the shoes?
  • These countless questions form the heartbeat of ‘Basabadol‘.Its pulse. Its lab-dub, lab-dub. Basabadol is, ultimately, an eternal migration from the inner self to infinity.
