- Gangchil is an adaptation of Anton Chekov’s ‘The Seagull’.
- The play centres around Krishnendu Chowdhury, a young, aspiring playwright who is desperate for new artistic forms and the approval of his famous actress mother, Anushuya Chowdhury.
- Anushuya arrives at the estate with her lover, the successful writer Bihan Chatterjee, whom Krishnendu both admires and resents. Krishnendu stages a symbolist play starring Niha, a young neighbour he is in love with. His play is ridiculed, especially by his mother, and Niha becomes infatuated with Bihan instead.
- She leaves Krishnendu and later suffers personal and professional disappointment, as Bihan abandons her and her acting career falters. Over time, Krishnendu becomes increasingly isolated and discouraged.
- In the final act, he commits suicide, unnoticed at first by the others who are engrossed in games and conversation.
