- Jater Bormibaksho is a Bengali theatrical adaptation inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird, reimagined within the Indian caste system and social realities. The title translates to “The Caste Box,” symbolizing the rigid societal compartments people are forced into.
- The story revolves around a morally upright woman—likely a lawyer, —who chooses to defend a lower-caste individual falsely accused of a crime. This person, much like Tom Robinson in the original novel, becomes a symbol of the oppressed voices in our society.
- Through the eyes of two children (inspired by Scout and Jem), the audience witnesses a journey from innocence to awareness. As the case unfolds, hidden prejudices, caste politics, and the hypocrisy of “civil society” surface. The story critiques how birth determines one’s worth in a deeply casteist society, no matter how unjust it may be.
Key Themes:
- Caste discrimination and social injustice
- Moral courage versus societal pressure
- Innocence, empathy, and coming of age
- Questioning tradition and inherited biases
- The play ends on a thought-provoking note, asking: Can we ever break free of the box that caste has put us in?
