লাহোর ১৯৪৭ হলো আসগর বজাহাত-এর লেখা বিখ্যাত উর্দু নাটক “যিস লাহোর নেহি দেখা, ওহ জন্মা হি নেহি”-র বাংলা রূপান্তর। এই নাটকটির অনুবাদ করেছেন অরিন্দম দাশগুপ্ত এবং নাটকটি মঞ্চস্থ করছে সুন্দরম নাট্যদল নির্দেশনায় রয়েছেন বিপ্লব বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। সুন্দরম-এর এই প্রযোজনাটি একভাবে শ্রদ্ধার্ঘ্য সেই মানুষটির প্রতি,শ্রী মনোজ মিত্র। যাঁর হাত ধরে সুন্দরম তৈরি হয়েছিল, এবং যিনি চিরকাল বিশ্বাস করতেন যে নাটক শুধু বিনোদন নয়, একটি সামাজিক দায়িত্ব।

নাটকটির পটভূমি দেশভাগ। এক মুসলিম পরিবার লখনউ ছেড়ে লাহোরে এসে ওঠে। পাকিস্তান সরকার থেকে তাদের একটি বাড়ি বরাদ্দ করা হয়। কিন্তু সেখানে গিয়ে তারা দেখে যে বাড়িটিতে একজন বৃদ্ধা হিন্দু মহিলা থাকেন, যিনি কিছুতেই সেই বাড়ি ছাড়তে চান না। কারণ এই বাড়িটাই তার সব কিছু। তার স্মৃতি, পরিচয় ও ভিটে-মাটি। শুরু হয় মতভেদ, মনোমালিন্য, ধর্মীয় দ্বন্দ্ব। কিন্তু ধীরে ধীরে দেখা যায়, এই বৃদ্ধা আর ওই পরিবারের মধ্যে একটা আলাদা সম্পর্ক তৈরি হচ্ছে।যেখানে মানুষ ধর্মের থেকে বড় হয়ে ওঠে। নাটকটি খুব সহজভাবে বোঝায় যে একটু সহানুভূতি থাকলে, বিভাজনের মাঝেও মিলন সম্ভব।

বর্তমানে ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশে ধর্মকে কেন্দ্র করে যে বিভাজন ও হিংসার রাজনৈতিক আবহাওয়া তৈরি হয়েছে তার প্রেক্ষিতে এই নাটকটি আলাদা প্রাসঙ্গিকতা বহন করে। আমাদের মনে হয়েছে ভারতের সার্বভৌমত্ব, বৈচিত্র এবং সর্বধর্ম সমন্বয়ের যে ইতিহাস, এই নাটকটি তার একটি উজ্জ্বল দৃষ্টান্ত।

“Lahore 1947” is the Bengali adaptation of “Jis Lahore Nahi Dekha Woh Janmahi Nahi”, the acclaimed play by Asgar Wajahat. Translated into Bengali by Arindam Dasgupta, this production is presented by the Sundaram, under the direction of Shri Biplab Bandopadhyay. For Sundaram, the decision to stage this play was inspired by the legacy of the late Manoj Mitra, whose commitment to meaningful storytelling shaped the group’s artistic vision. Through this production, Sundaram reaffirms its belief that theatre is not just a reflection of society, but also a medium that can challenge it and heal it.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Partition, this powerful play explores the enduring conflict between communal division and human compassion. In post-Partition Lahore, a Muslim family is allotted a house abandoned during the chaos only to find it still occupied by an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave.

What begins as a confrontation between identities soon unfolds into a deeply moving narrative of empathy, shared loss, and quiet resistance. Through sharp dialogue and poignant moments, the play challenges notions of ownership, belonging, and nationalism ultimately affirming the unbreakable thread of humanity that binds us all. Rich with cultural nuance and historical resonance, this play remains a timeless reminder of the cost of division and the healing power of understanding.
