- Matshonyay embodies a state of chaos and lawlessness where the strong exploits the weak, much like how big fishes prey on smaller ones echoing “survival of the fittest”. After King Prabhakarvardhan’s death in the Pushyabhuti dynasty of Sthaneshwar, his elder son Rajyavardhan claims the throne by birthright, while middle son Harshavardhan seeks it through diplomacy. Feudal lord Mahabahu, returning from war with the Huns, anoints Rajya king.
- Rajya proposes to Mahabahu’s daughter Lalantika, but becomes enamored with Mula, the captivating Hun queen. Meanwhile, youngest son Krishnavardhan confesses his love for Lalantika. In a heated clash, Mahabahu kills one of his own sons, but Krishna and Lalantika escape to Gour. Shashanka, the cunning king of Gour, schemes for Sthaneshwar’s throne, aligning with Harsha. Mula, now queen beside Rajya, seeks vengeance against Mahabahu.
- The political drama peaks with Harsha and Shashanka’s shrewdness, Mula’s revenge, and the deaths of both Krishna and Rajya. The play culminates in the tragic consequences of Mahabahu, who remains loyal to the throne amidst chaos. Yet, it leaves us questioning—can the cycle of Matshonyay ever truly be broken?
