One dawn on the day of Mahalaya, ninety-year-old Shashishekar Bandopadhyay reminisces about the old days with his wife Madhabilata, who passed away twenty-five years ago. While doing so, he recites lines from his favorite play, Sophocles’ Oedipus.
The next morning, he finds himself embroiled in a heated debate with his four sons — Shankar (Byomkesh), a former Naxalite now working in a small library; Shambhu (Promothesh), a middle son working in Mumbai’s film industry; Shibu (Pinakesh), a successful doctor living in Bangalore; and Bhibhu (Debesh), the youngest, who is perpetually a party worker and supplier. The debate revolves around the social-political condition of the country, the family, and some crucial decisions.
Most hurt in this confrontation is not a family member but the elderly Dayamoyee, who had silently cared for everyone all these years, keeping her love hidden.
Shashishekar, at one point, wanted to leave everything behind — and finally leaves life itself to join his wife. Dayamoyee once again takes charge, as if holding together the fragments of this broken country.
Time, which had long been stagnant, begins to move again.
