- ” Ram Babu” is a tale of the grief of guardians and caregivers whose children have lost their lives to an inhumane system. The protagonist of the play, Ram Babu, is a regular person, who wishes to pass away due to the guilt he feels after the death of his wife and son – to reunite with them, and give them the time and attention he never afforded them evil when they were alive. But to take one’s own life is as difficult as surviving. Hence why Ram Babu has been unable to do it, living on with loneliness and indifference choking his heart. His imagination is swamped by visions of his son, the latter’s friends, his dear departed wife and his sister. At such a time, a widow, Madhubala and her daughter Mina Kumari, move into and rent the share of the residence owned by Ram Babu’s elder brother. Mina is a doctor, transferred to a major hospital in Kolkata. Madhubala is a lively person herself, who believes good food and good music can improve everyone’s moods and emotions. Their company helps steer Ram Babu back to life, and even enables him to reorient his relationship with his childhood friend Shyam as opposed to their prior conflicted interactions. Suddenly one day news arrives that Mina Kumari had taken her life while at work in the hospital. Eventually it is revealed that there was no suicide, and that she was murdered, with the whole institution attempting to cover it up.
- Ram Babu – who has wanted to carry out suicidal acts himself – and Shyam Babu – who is estranged from his own family – and Madhubala, who has now tragically lost her only child, unite in their shared grief and begin the struggle to obtain justice for Mina. ‘Ram Babu’ tells the story of this struggle, of the pain of parents who have lost their children, of individuals standing their ground in front of a system that leaps at them with teeth and nails bared in order to suppress the fight against abuse and brutality.
