- Lachhman Agaria, a blacksmith in British India, comes from a family that takes iron as their medium of art. Lachhman has to take up a job in a utensils factory which practically demotes him from an artist to a labourer, a fact he struggles to come to terms with. After 1947, Lachhman’s son Nawal also joins a factory as a worker. Nawal has learnt from his father the mantra of struggle for the betterment of the oppressed masses.
- Nawal Agaria dreams of a better world where the proletariat will have the power. He gets involved in Left politics and rises through the ranks of a progressive communist party to become MP. His father was a factory hand too, who had spontaneously protested against an exploitative management in British India to emerge as a leader of sorts of the workers. Nawal has learnt from his father the mantra of struggle for the betterment of the oppressed masses.
- At the height of popularity and fame, he realizes that his values changed drastically. Today he has money, power and fame but deep inside he is deserted, scared. He infers that in the course of breaking one oppressive institution he has actually built and got engulfed in an equally tyrannical institution. He knows he has to start afresh.
