The Performing Arts Tribe (TPAT), a vibrant community of art lovers, proudly presents “Tawayafnama,” a mesmerizing dance-drama exploring the lives of India’s iconic tawaifs. The event will be held at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Ho Chi Minh Sarani, Kolkata, on 1st October at 7:00 pm.
“Tawayafnama” revives the legacy of tawaifs who are often misunderstood as mere courtesans, but little do people know the pivotal role they played in shaping India’s artistic and cultural landscapes from the 19th to the late 20th century. The performance brings to life the stories of over 10 legendary tawaifs, including Gauhar Jaan, Bibo Jaan, Vidyadhari Bai, Husna Bai, Rasoolan Bai, Asgari Bai, Chappan Churi, Mahalakha Bai and Begum Akhtar. Their triumphs and struggles are portrayed through evocative choreography, soul-stirring music, and poetry, painting a rich tapestry of resilience.
This play has been inspired from the book, “Tawayafnama” written by Vimal Kumar.
At Kolkata, TPAT has collaborated with the Little Thespian group headed by Uma Jhunjhunwala; her daughter Gunjan Azhar will be playing the role of Gauhar Jaan. Nilopa Maitra, daughter of Paramita Maitra, will perform the opening dance, and many other important collaborations have been included to keep the flavor intact.
Tawayafnama has already done 4 houseful shows in total in Delhi and Gurgaon. This would be the 5th show from the production house and 1st show in Kolkata.
