- Ubhaychar (Amphibian Man) is a thought-provoking drama that explores the relationship between science, morality, nature, and human greed. The play revolves around the extraordinary character of Icthyendar, a young man who can live both on land and underwater after a scientific operation performed by Dr. Salvador.
One of the most important themes of the play is the conflict between science and society. Dr. Salvador represents scientific progress and innovation. His experiment on Icthyendar was originally done to save a dying child, but society misunderstands his intentions. During the trial, religious and social authorities accuse him of interfering with God’s creation.
- This conflict shows how society often fears or rejects new scientific ideas. Another major theme is human greed and exploitation. Pedro Zurita represents selfishness and materialism. Instead of seeing Icthyendar as a human being, he sees him as a tool to collect pearls from the ocean and increase his wealth. His actions demonstrate how greed can lead people to exploit others without compassion.
- The play also explores the contrast between the natural world and human civilization. Icthyendar feels peaceful and free in the ocean but uncomfortable in the polluted and selfish world of humans. Through this contrast, the drama suggests that humans have lost their harmony with nature. Love and innocence are also important elements in the story. Icthyendar’s love for Florina is pure and sincere. However, misunderstandings and manipulation by Pedro create tragedy and emotional conflict. Overall, Ubhaychar is not only a dramatic story but also a philosophical reflection on the ethical limits of scientific experimentation, the destructive nature of greed, and the importance of respecting both humanity and nature
