Saoli Mitra Smaran

To pay homage to our Guru, Saoli Mitra,  on her death anniversary

Her immortal creation “Naathavati Anaathavat” now gets the voice of her disciple, Arpita Ghosh.

• “Naathavati Anaathavat” is a legendary play written and used to be acted by Padmasree Late Saoli Mitra since 1983. The play, based on a narrative style, was originally acted as a solo acting, supported by musicians (called Jurir Dal). The play was immensely popular among the audiences across the country. Later on she also presented the play in a play-reading style and the acting style that she used was also immensely adored. The lone actress on the stage is the narrator or the ‘kathakar’. But she used to enact the characters also.
• The story of the play is based on Mahabharata and revolves around Draupadi, known for her beauty. It narrates how this noble soul faced life of an insult and sought redress of all the wrongs done to her in name of a Dharmayuddha. She has had five Pandavas as her husbands, but suffered like a destitute all her life. That is why the Mahabharata describes her as Naathavati Anaathavat i,e a woman inspite of having five husbands, remains without a protector.

• Arpita Ghosh, a very close disciple of Saoli Mitra, who she considered as her daughter, has picked up this art and is ready to carry the baton. She now performs the play as a play-reading on stage accompanied by musicians. Naathavati Anaathavat has thus not stopped. It continues as a legacy from the mother to the daughter and Arpita is now the “Kathakar”.

• সৃষ্টির কর্তা ব্রহ্মা! মৃত্যুর যম! জীবন মরণের পাটিগণিত কষেন তাঁরাই! নথিভুক্ত করেন চিত্রগুপ্ত! কিন্তু এখানে ব্রহ্মা ব্যস্ত অন্য অঙ্কে…গদির অঙ্কে! ক্ষমতার লোভেই মর্তের মৃত যত ভন্ড দালাল যোতদার পুনর্জন্ম নিয়ে ফিরতে চায় পৃথিবীতে! তারা কিডন্যাপ করে যমরাজেরই স্ত্রীকে! অসহায় যম যায় ব্রহ্মার দরবারে। নারদ বাঁটুল বিশ্বাসের ছদ্মবেশে ঢোকে নরকে অপরাধের সমীকরণ বুঝতে! মরণ তো শুধু অত্যাচারীর হয় না, গরীব অত্যাচারিতও মরে! মানিকের মত! যমের স্ত্রীকে উদ্ধারের নামে ‘কর্তা’ যাকে ঠেলে দেন নরকের অন্ধকারে!

• বাংলার সর্বকালের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ নাটককার শ্রী মনোজ মিত্রের ‘নরক গুলজার’ ছিল সত্তরের দশকের বাংলা তথা ভারতের সমাজ এবং রাজনীতির এক চালচিত্র! সেখানে ক্ষমতালোভী রাষ্ট্রশক্তি তার গদি টিকিয়ে রাখার ‘দায়ে’ আঁতাত করে শোষকের সাথে। যত চোর-চিটিংবাজ-গুন্ডা-দালাল-খুনি হয়ে ওঠে শাসকের ‘জোটসঙ্গী’! আর গরীব সাধারণ জনগণ দাবার বোড়ে। এই যেন আমাদের দেশের রাজনীতির সনাতন ধর্ম! উপমহাদেশের রাজনীতির হাতবদল হলেও ভোলবদল হয়নি কোনভাবেই। তাই মনোজ বাবুর এই কালজয়ী নাটক আজও সমানভাবে প্রাসঙ্গিক এবং সুদূর ভবিষ্যতেও হয়তো এই টেক্সট আরও প্রাসঙ্গিক এবং আরও প্রয়োজনীয় হয়ে দাঁড়াবে – আজকের দিনে দাঁড়িয়ে এই আশঙ্কাও একেবারেই অমূলক নয়! ব্রহ্মা যখন ঘোষণা করেন,’আমার তো গদির মোহ কোনদিনই নেই।’ আনমনেই ঠোঁটের কোণে একটা চওড়া হাসি আসে। সত্যিই! সাহিত্যিকেরা কি ভবিষ্যৎ দ্রষ্টাও হন?

• পলিটিক্যাল স্যাটায়ারের এক উৎকৃষ্ট নিদর্শন ‘নরক গুলজার’। তখনও আমরা শাসকের বিরুদ্ধে সমবেতভাবে লড়াই করার চেষ্টা করেছি, কিন্তু পারিনি। এখনও আমরা মাঠে ময়দানে রাজপথে বারবার জোট বাঁধছি, কিন্তু এই শোষণের ভিত কোনভাবেই টলাতে পারছি না! শাসক তার আধিপত্যবাদের দর্শন সমাজে সংসারে নিপুণ হাতে চারিয়ে দিচ্ছে।

• কোথাও ধর্মের নামে পাপ-পূণ্যের দোহাই দিয়ে…কোথাও পেশিশক্তির মাধ্যমে সাধারণ মানুষের মধ্যে একটা ভয়ের আবহাওয়া সৃষ্টি করছে। যে ভয় কাটিয়ে আমাদের ক্ষমতা নেই মেরুদন্ড সোজা করে দঁড়ানোর! আর এই অন্ধকারে যাঁর কাছে সত্য চেয়ে, জীবন চেয়ে, আলো চেয়ে দরবার করা যায়, সেই ভগবান নিদ্রাচ্ছন্ন। তাই নাট্যকারের আক্ষেপ, ‘ভগবান নিদ্রা গিয়েছেন…’।

• আজও দেশ তথা রাজ্য জুড়ে যখন খুন ধর্ষণ দুর্নীতি লুঠপাট চলছে, তখনও সেই ভগবান যেন ঘুমিয়ে আছেন অকাতরে! এই নিদ্রা কবে ভাঙবে জানি না। তবে আমাদের উচিত এই ঘুমকে ব্যঙ্গ করা। হাতুড়ির আঘাতে এই ঘুম ভেঙে দেওয়া। মানুষকে আরেকভাবে সচেতন করা। জাগিয়ে তোলা।

• The play follows the visit of an aging professor, Niladri, and his glamorous, much younger second wife, Ela, to the rural estate that once belonged to the professor’s late first wife. This estate now sustains their comfortable urban lifestyle.

• Two close friends—Bhanu, the brother of Niladri’s first wife and long-time caretaker of the estate, and Atanu, the local doctor—both become captivated by Ela, even as they lament the monotony of their provincial lives. Sukanya, Niladri’s daughter from his first marriage, who has worked alongside Bhanu to keep the estate running, quietly suffers from her unreciprocated love for Atanu.

• Tensions come to a head when Niladri announces his plan to sell the estate—Bhanu and Sukanya’s home—in order to reinvest the money for a higher income for himself and Ela. The announcement triggers a breaking point for Bhanu.

• Emerging in 2022 from London, United Kingdom, JAWARI blends jazz, other, spoken word and experimental into a genre-defying sound, JAWARI is a multi-disciplinary collective that navigates a diverse musical landscape, citing inspiration from a variety of genres.

• Led by sitarist Tommy Khosla—who has gained significant recognition earning features in BBC Asian Network and playing Glastonbury and Royal Albert Hall—other core members include Latin Grammy awardee and Aterciopelados (Europe) member Gregorio Merchán on percussion, Taylor Frost on guitar, Billie Sophoclides on saxophone and Nashville’s first Youth Poet Laureate Lagnajita Mukhopadhyay on poetry and bass.

• Drawing on the eclectic musical and interdisciplinary backgrounds of its members and collaborators with an emphasis on the Indian Classical tradition, JAWARI is cultivating a distinct identity within the global jazz scene.

• Following sell-out gigs in London as well as playing the Paris Olympics and SXSW (US & UK), their debut album, ROAD RASA— supported by Help Musicians and the British Arts Council—has also received airplay on BBC 6 and Worldwide FM, promising a mainstay in the London scene.
