বর্তমান সময়ে ২০২৬ এ কলকাতার একটি থিয়েটার দল “পাশ্চাত্য”, মহাভারত নাটকটি মঞ্চস্থ করার পরিকল্পনা করছে। আমরা জানি বর্তমান রাজনীতির সমগ্রটাই মহাভারতে বিরাজমান, সেখানে এমন কোনো রাজনীতি বা টানাপোড়েন নেই যা বর্তমান রাজনীতির সঙ্গে মেলে না। এটাই এই মহাকাব্যের বিশেষত্ব।
ঠিক একই ভাবে এই নাটকের দলের রাজনীতিও মিলতে শুরু করে মহাভারতের কূটনীতির সঙ্গে, মহাভারতের চরিত্র গুলোর দেনা-পাওনার হিসেব, প্রেম, ঘৃনা, হিংসা, প্রতিশোধের আগুন গ্রাস করতে দেখা যায় দলের সদস্যদের। ক্রমেই তাদের মধ্যে জীবন্ত হতে থাকে, কৌরব-পাণ্ডবদের চারিত্রিক গুণাবলী। বাড়তে থাকে দুই পক্ষের বিরোধ।
কেউ ধর্মের অনুসারী হয়ে অধর্মে নিযুক্ত হন, কেউ অধর্মি আক্ষা পেয়েও ধর্মের পথে অগ্রসর হন। উত্তরোত্তর বাড়তে থাকা এই দ্বন্দ্ব আকার নেয় কুরুক্ষেত্রের।
In present-day 2026, a Kolkata-based theatre group named Paschatya is planning to stage a play on the Mahabharata. We know that the entirety of modern politics is reflected within the Mahabharata—there is hardly any political tension today that does not find its parallel in that epic. This is precisely what makes it timeless.
In a similar way, the internal dynamics of this theatre group begin to mirror the intricate politics of the Mahabharata. The calculations of give-and-take, along with love, hatred, jealousy, and the fire of revenge, gradually start consuming the members of the group. Slowly, the characteristics of the Kauravas and Pandavas come alive within them. The conflict between two opposing sides intensifies.
Some, in the name of righteousness (dharma), end up engaging in unrighteous acts (adharma), while others, despite being branded as unrighteous, move towards the path of virtue. This ever-growing conflict ultimately takes the form of a modern-day Kurukshetra.

এই নাটক নারীবাদী সংগ্রাম ও রাজনৈতিক বিপ্লবের সংমিশ্রণ, যা জাতীয়তাবাদী আন্দোলনের ভেতরে নারীদের শোষণ, প্রান্তিকীকরণ এবং বিশ্বাসঘাতকতাকে তুলে ধরে। বৈশ্বিক উপনিবেশবিরোধী সংগ্রাম এবং বিষাক্ত পুরুষতান্ত্রিক ক্ষমতার সমীকরণের পটভূমিতে এটি ব্যক্তিগত পরিচয়, ও অস্তিত্ব রক্ষার অনুসন্ধানের গল্প উন্মোচন করে।
নাটকটির কেন্দ্রবিন্দুতে রয়েছেন অ্যাগনেস স্মেডলি— এক আমেরিকান নারী, যিনি ১৯১৭ সালে নিউ ইয়র্কে ভারতীয় জাতীয়তাবাদী আন্দোলনের প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হন। তিনি লালা লাজপত রায়, এম. এন. রায়, শৈলেন্দ্রনাথ ঘোষ এবং হেরম্বলাল গুপ্ত সহ নির্বাসিত বিশিষ্ট ভারতীয় বিপ্লবীদের সাথে যৌথভাবে কাজ করেন। যৌন নির্যাতন ও রাজনৈতিক চক্রান্তসহ তীব্র ব্যক্তিগত আঘাতের মুখোমুখি হওয়া সত্ত্বেও, অ্যাগনেস ভারতবর্ষের স্বাধীনতার লক্ষ্যের প্রতি অবিচল থাকেন।
পরবর্তীতে তিনি বিপ্লবী নেতা বীরেন্দ্রনাথ চট্টোপাধ্যায় (চট্টো)-র সাথে কাজ করতে বার্লিনে যান এবং তাঁর অনানুষ্ঠানিক সঙ্গিনী হন। তবে তীব্র উপদলীয় কোন্দল, আদর্শগত মতপার্থক্য এবং কুরুচিপূর্ণ চরিত্রহননের চেষ্টা অ্যাগনেসকে মানসিক বিপর্যয়ের দিকে ঠেলে দেয়। পুরুষতান্ত্রিক বিপ্লবী মহল দ্বারা তিনি শোষিত ও প্রান্তিক হয়েছেন তা অনুধাবন করে, অ্যাগনেস নিজের আত্মপরিচয় ফিরে পেতে আন্দোলন ত্যাগ করতে বাধ্য হন।
