Written in the background of the mid 90s, this extremely intense and revealing play by Late Amit Maitra, travels through the core concepts of human existence. It speaks of a decoding journey whereby the meaning of life changes altogether at different junctures.
The story revolves around the myth of an accidental act by a newborn performing a playful pull of his mother’s ‘nolok’, thereby leading to her nasal tear and striking story for the future gossip. Now this act of the past, which has always been casually discussed again and again in nostalgic environments takes an abrupt turn when certain correlative analysis is done.
What apparently was just a childish act, turns out to be a deliberately created myth and shatters the entire societal existence of the protagonist. He is exposed to a different truth about himself and his entire take on the world changes.
On one hand the play displays the unveiling of the myth and its hollow layers and the exposure of a different truth in it. On the other hand it speaks of core values of life and how humanity overpowers non-living matters in this universe.
Directed and acted by Sohan Bandopadhyay, this play of 100 minutes by Nat-Ranga ensures a high tide of emotions for the audience along with a detective journey towards truth.
Binodini opera is a music-based drama written and directed by Abanti Chakraborty, with Shibashis Bandopadhyay as Co-Writer and Rudroroop Mukhopadhyay playing the role of a dramaturg.
This ensemble cast based theatre revolves around the life and chronicles of Nati Binodini Dasi, the prima donna of Bengali Theatre of 18th Century. Binodini Dasi, coming from the so-called prohibited quarters of a harlot’s bed, had risen to be the star of theatre by sheer practice, perseverance, and penance. Guided by her Guru Girish Ghosh, she had left no stones unturned to have a theatre for the p ublic. Debauched and denuded by her male counterparts, she silently left the stage at the zenith of her career.
The theatre embodies an ensemble cast with the historical presence of Girish Ghosh,Amritalal Basu,Gurmuk Roy,Kumar Bahadur,Rangababu and a plethora of the then who’s who of Bengali theatre. The theatre attempts to question the patriarchal hierarchy of contemporary times through a narrative of songs and expository performances. Interestingly, enough, the presence of patriarchy has not much mired with time.
Macbeth: What’s Done is Done, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by Rajat Kapoor, featuring Ranvir Shorey, Vinay Pathak & others.
Macbeth: What’s Done is Done is about greed, ambition and guilt.
Julio (Vinay Pathak) & Pedro draw you into the world of Macbeth, or Macky B (Ranvir Shorey) & Lady Macbeth, an adaptation of Macbeth and his lady. Macky B is a good, honest man, a brave soldier and a loyal friend.
Macky B & his friend Banquo set out on an adventure in the forest, where they meet three witches who give them three impending prophecies, for whom “fair is foul, and foul is fair.” After that, the perception of Macky B is “Stars hide your fires; let not light see my black and deep desires.” Vinay Pathak and Aadar Malik make it a scary, clownish affair. “By the prickling of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.”
The audience becomes the fellow citizen of the then-filthy Scotland, where you will live with Macky B and his lady. Beware, as they “look like the innocent flower, but are the serpent under it.”
King Lear: Nothing Like Lear, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s King Lear, directed by Rajat Kapoor, featuring Vinay Pathak.
King Lear is widely regarded as Shakespeare’s crowning artistic achievement. Vinay Pathak’s solo performance as Lear exceeds his acting prowess & is breathtaking at times.
“I am a king, my masters. Know you that?” – Lear, the aging king of Britain, decides to step down from the throne and divide his kingdom evenly among his three daughters. First, however, he puts his daughters through a test, asking each to tell him how much she loves him.
Goneril and Regan, Lear’s older daughters, give their father flattering answers. But Cordelia, Lear’s youngest and favorite daughter, remains silent, saying that she has no words to describe how much she loves her father. Lear flies into a rage and disowns Cordelia.
The king of France, who has courted Cordelia, says that he still wants to marry her even without her land, and she accompanies him to France without her father’s blessing.
Lear quickly learns that he made a bad decision. Goneril and Regan swiftly begin to undermine the little authority that Lear still holds. Unable to believe that his beloved daughters are betraying him, Lear slowly goes insane.
He flees his daughters’ houses to wander on a heath during a great thunderstorm, accompanied by his Fool and by Kent, a loyal nobleman in disguise “How? Nothing will come out of nothing.”
When Cordelia tells Lear that she can say ‘nothing’ about her love for her father, this line is Lear’s response; the line reverberates throughout the play. Lear essentially repeats when he tells the Fool that “nothing can be made out of nothing.”
These repetitions reflect King Lear’s obsession with absences and loss, which prepares the audience for a play that begins with an impulsive, senseless act and ends with no meaning, no hope, no redemption for its characters.
“Who is it that can tell me who I am?” ~ Audiences are pulled into the story as they become the then citizens of ancient Britain and witness the tragic hero, his three flaws, his arrogance, his ignorance and his misjudgments. G.B. Shaw once wrote, “No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear.”
