- Gangchil is an adaptation of Anton Chekov’s ‘The Seagull’.
- The play centres around Krishnendu Chowdhury, a young, aspiring playwright who is desperate for new artistic forms and the approval of his famous actress mother, Anushuya Chowdhury. Anushuya arrives at the estate with her lover, the successful writer Bihan Chatterjee, whom Krishnendu both admires and resents.
- Krishnendu stages a symbolist play starring Niha, a young neighbour he is in love with. His play is ridiculed, especially by his mother, and Niha becomes infatuated with Bihan instead. She leaves Krishnendu and later suffers personal and professional disappointment, as Bihan abandons her and her acting career falters.
- Over time, Krishnendu becomes increasingly isolated and discouraged. In the final act, he commits suicide, unnoticed at first by the others who are engrossed in games and conversation.
