- Devdas and Parvati (Paro) grow up together in a Bengal village, bound by an intimate friendship that gradually blossoms into love. But their love is trapped within the rigid social structures of their time—family pride, class and caste distinctions, and the obsession with social status. When Paro’s family proposes marriage, Devdas is unable to stand against his family’s opposition and rejects the relationship.
- Heartbroken, Paro is married to a wealthy older man, while Devdas returns to Calcutta carrying the burden of a love he cannot accept and cannot forget. His inability to confront his own weakness slowly turns into despair, and he seeks escape through alcohol and self-destruction.
- In Calcutta, Devdas encounters Chandramukhi, a courtesan who sees beyond his arrogance, anger and despair. Although Devdas remains emotionally imprisoned by his memories of Paro, Chandramukhi develops a profound and selfless love for him. Her transformation reveals a striking contrast between the society’s judgement of a woman and the humanity that exists within her.
- As Devdas sinks deeper into alcoholism and isolation, Paro continues to live within the boundaries imposed upon her. Neither can escape the consequences of the choices made for them—and by them.
- Realising that death is approaching, Devdas sets out on one final journey to see Paro. He reaches her doorstep in the darkness, but dies before they can meet. Inside the house, Paro senses something is wrong and rushes towards the door, only to be stopped by the walls of the very society that separated them.
- Devdas is not merely a story of unfulfilled love. It is a tragic exploration of human weakness, social prejudice, patriarchy, class hierarchy and the devastating consequences of indecision. At its heart lies a question that remains timeless: Is Devdas destroyed by love—or by his inability to fight for it?
