• Set in 1970s Kolkata, Canvasser draws from Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s story “Canvasser Krishnalal,” portraying the life of Krishnalal, a humble medicine canvasser. Amidst the socio-economic struggles of the post-independence Bengali middle class, Krishnalal strives for stability through small jobs — first canvassing household medicines, then working as an auctioneer. Dishonour and dismissal, however, push him into despair. Yet, when cinema begins to mirror the lives of common people through filmmakers like Mrinal Sen, Krishnalal rediscovers his dignity, work, and hope.
• The play intertwines Bibhutibhushan’s narrative simplicity with the stark realism of Mrinal Sen’s cinematic vision. It reflects the universal truth that in a competitive world, we are all canvassers — selling dreams, ideas, or survival. Through the struggle, pain, and quiet joys of the middle class, Canvasser captures the human spirit’s endurance under capitalism’s shadow and the eternal quest for respect and meaning.

• কুয়াশাঘেরা দার্জিলিং এর রোমাঞ্চকর জলাপাহাড়। ততোধিক রহস্যময় তার হোম স্টে, সভ্যতা থেকে বহুদূরে এসে যেখানে এক অদ্ভুতুড়ে ভূতের মুখোমুখি চাটার্ড অ্যাকাউন্ট্যান্ট ‘দীপ্তেশ’। ‘মোহন মনোহর শোভন সুন্দর মুরলী বদন শাস্ত্রী’- যেমন বাহারে নাম, তেমনই রঙিন তার চরিত্র। তাদের রসিকতা, তর্ক, স্বীকারোক্তি জুড়ে একে একে উঠে আসে ভালোবাসা, উপেক্ষা, আক্ষেপ, খিদে, যুদ্ধের গল্পরা। আসলে কি আছে আবছায়া এই পাহাড়চূড়ায়? কি চমক অপেক্ষা করছে এই গা-ছমছমে গল্পের শেষে?

• উইলিয়াম শেক্সপিয়রের ‘ম্যাকবেথ’ অবলম্বনে রচিত *’মকরন্দ’* নাটকটি ‘স্কন্দপুর নটধা চক্র’ নামক একটি থিয়েটার দলের অভ্যন্তরীণ দ্বন্দ্ব, উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষা এবং চরম ট্র্যাজেডির গল্প।

• নাটকের মূল চরিত্র মকরন্দ দলের পরিচালক ধনঞ্জয়কে খুন করে থিয়েটারের নিয়ন্ত্রণ নিতে চায়। এরপর নিজের অপরাধ ঢাকতে ও ক্ষমতার লোভে সে একে একে বন্ধন ও দেবশ্মিকে নৃশংসভাবে হত্যা করে। কিন্তু এই পাপের পর মকরন্দ নিজেই তীব্র মানসিক অপরাধবোধ ও হ্যালুসিনেশনের শিকার হয়ে উন্মাদ হয়ে পড়ে এবং শেষে আত্মহত্যা করে।

• বন্ধুর এই বিশ্বাসঘাতকতায় ধনঞ্জয়ের পুত্র মলয়ও মানসিক ভারসাম্য হারিয়ে ফেলে নাটকের শেষে এক ভয়াবহ হত্যাকাণ্ডে লিপ্ত হয়, যা পুরো দলের বিনাশ ডেকে আনে।

• Swapnasandhani’s Hamlet is based on William Shakespeare’s drama of the same name but with a modern twist to the eternal dilemma of ‘To Be or Not To Be.’

• In the current socio-economic context when a young man, sensitive & sensible like Hamlet comes up to the audience and speaks directly from his heart, for them, it becomes our own voice.

• “Angina Jure Bhor” is a theatre production that talks about losing cultural spaces which involves the disappearance of places, practices, and intangible aspects of a community’s heritage, driven by factors like globalization, urban development, climate change, conflict, and assimilation. This loss erodes community connection, identity, and valuable knowledge, leading to cultural homogenization and decreased societal resilience.

• As the news of another iconic theatre auditorium of the city, named Circarena, built in 1976,being in ruins and decay resurfaces, we are left with the pertinent question of asking ourselves,“How long will the other theatre spaces/ auditoriums be able to keep afloat? Or it’s just a matter of time before they will be turned into ruins.

• The play begins with the entry of a young research scholar named Nafiz, who visits Joydeb Debsharma, the present owner of an imaginary, old,and dilapidated theatre hall named RadhaRani Mancha, located somewhere in North Kolkata.

• Joydeb Debsharma is an octogenarian living with his blind wife, Damayanti Sen, who is also suffering from mild cognitive impairment. Joydeb is initially hostile towards Nafiz and shows no interest in helping Nafiz with his research project, but after much persuasion, he finally gives in and starts narrating his story to Nafiz.

• He is entrapped by the miraculous journey of a young Gomira Dancer from a small village of Khagail in Dinajpur, lured into the world of Kolkata theatre. As Nafiz navigates through the many mysteries of the RadhaRani Mancha, he realises the unparalleled love of this old man for theatre and this auditorium.

• The Kurukshetra War has just ended. Gandhari, after losing her hundred sons, is a much-grieved lady. She holds Krishna responsible for her misery. Radha asks Krishna why, despite being the most powerful person in India, Krishna cannot confide in anyone. Krishna tells his side of the story.

• As the story unfolds we see how Krishna, the young shepherd boy, is always trusted by people around him to be their savior. How every time it is Krishna who has to take a strong – and sometimes not pleasing-for-all stand to ensure justice. How Krishna must sacrifice his personal life to establish the rule of Dharma. How Krishna merely becomes an instrument of justice. How destiny takes over his life. But can Krishna, who has been the symbol of love, allow destiny to take away all that is tender in him?

• Can a commitment to the state be greater than a commitment to human values? How does a responsible man choose? Can a responsible man choose? Can war bring peace?

“আক্ষরিক” ~ ইতিহাসকে ফিরে দেখা,স্বীকৃতি পাওয়া না পাওয়ার কথা

• বাংলা ভাষার প্রথম অক্ষরশিল্পীর নাম পঞ্চানন কর্মকার। যদিও বাংলা মুদ্রণযোগ্য সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ হরফছাঁদ তৈরির উদ্যোগ নিয়েছিল বৃটিশরা, মূলতঃ ধর্মপ্রচার, বানিজ্য ও শাসনের জন্য। ন্যাথানিয়াল ব্রাসো হালহেড ও চার্লস উইলকিন্স ছিলেন অগ্রনী। কিন্তু সুসমঞ্জস শৈল্পিক হরফছাঁদ নির্মাণের অক্ষরশিল্পী পঞ্চানন কর্মকারের নাম অনুল্লেখ থেকে গেল সচল-হরফ নির্মাণের ইতিহাসে।

• শিল্পী পঞ্চানন ১৭৭৫ থেকে ১৭৭৮ সাল অবধি সারাদিন ও রাত এক করে বাংলা ভাষার হরফছাঁদ ( পাঞ্চ) তৈরি করে গেছেন। ১৭৭৮ সালে ন্যাথানিয়াল ব্রাসো হালহেড লিখিত A Grammar Of Bengali Language বইতে ছাপা হল প্রথম বাংলা সুসমঞ্জস হরফছাঁদ। বইয়ের কোথাও উল্লেখ করা হলো না অক্ষরশিল্পী পঞ্চানন কর্মকারের নাম। চার্লস উইলকিন্সের নাম প্রচারে এলো। পঞ্চানন কর্মকার হার না মানা এক অনন্য শিল্পীকে চিনেছিলেন উইলিয়াম কেরি।

• কেরি নিয়ে আসেন পঞ্চানন কর্মকারকে বৃটিশদের খপ্পর থেকে শ্রীরামপুর মিশন প্রেসে। পঞ্চানন কর্মকার আরও শৈল্পিক ও সুন্দর করে তুলেছেন বাংলা হরফ যা পরবর্তীতে বিদ্যাসাগর এসে সংস্কার করে আমাদের হাতে তুলে দিলেন ‘বর্ণপরিচয়’ (১৮৫৫)। কিন্তু আড়ালে চলে গেল এক লড়াকু অক্ষরশিল্পীর লড়াই করার কথা। আজ যখন চারপাশে ইতিহাসকে ভুলিয়ে দেওয়ার নয়া-ইতিহাস নির্মাণের চেষ্টা চলছে তখন বাঙালি হিসেবে বাংলা ভাষার এক অক্ষরশিল্পীর আখ্যানকে মঞ্চে আনা খানিকটা দায় আমাদের। শ্রদ্ধা জানানোও বটে।

• রজত চক্রবর্তীর উপন্যাস ‘পঞ্চাননের হরফ’ আধারিত দেবাশিসের নাট্যনির্মাণে অনীক প্রযোজনা ‘আক্ষরিক’ আজকের বিপন্ন বাংলা ভাষাকে বাঙালির সামনে তুলে ধরার একটা দায়িত্ব পালন মাত্র।

• ক্ষয়ে যাওয়া যাত্রা জগতের এক নকলনবিশের কাহিনী।এক অভিনেতা, নাম গোপাল, সে গ্রামে গঞ্জে বিখ্যাত শান্তিগোপালের সস্তা বদলি হিসেবে আত্ম প্রকাশ করেছে।এই আমাদের কল্পনা। সে হাততালিধন্য পালা থেকে টুকে নিজের পালা লিখে নেয়। সে একবার কার্ল মার্ক্স হয় একবার লেনিন একবার হিটলার।

• তার ভিতরে এত গুলো মানুষ।পরস্পর বিরোধী হয়তো বা।মার্ক্স এর মানবিক দর্শন আর হিটলারের অমানবিক ফ্যাসিজম কোনটা নিয়ে শেষ অব্দি এগোবে মানুষ?কোন অন্তর বিশ্বাস নিয়ে এগোবে অভিনেতা ?

• গোপাল উন্মাদ।সে নিজের হাতে ধর্ষনের শাস্তি দেওয়ার ভার তুলে নেয়।এই কি দেওয়ালে পিঠ ঠেকে যাওয়া মধ্য বিত্তের বিদ্রোহ?
  এক মরমী বিদ্রোহী অভিনেতা আর তার চারিদিকের বহমান জীবন নিয়ে এই যাত্রা গোপাল।

• মানুষের কি ছায়া থাকে? নাকি প্রত্যেকটা ছায়ার একটা করে মানুষ থাকে? কি সম্পর্ক মানুষের সঙ্গে ছায়ার? নিজের ছায়া হারিয়ে ফেলা এক নাটুয়ার গল্প বলে ‘ছায়ামানব’, সেই নাটুয়া, যে রূপকথার ডানায় ভর করে উড়তে চেয়েছিল।
